With warmer weather just around the corner, taking care of your dogs can present new and different challenges. It’s that time of the year where we look into the summertime threats to dogs and what you can do about it. After all, we all want to take care of our pets and do what’s best for them.

Snakes

Not just any snake, rattle snakes! Like in the image above. Rattle snakes can present to most obvious summertime threats to dogs – and humans alike. This can happen just about anyplace where the climate is hot and dry. These images were taken by one of our service techs in Thousand Oaks, California. We’ve seen them in many of our service areas in the Los Angeles area, particularly in Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley. They have even been spotted in the North Dallas areas of Frisco and Flower Mound, Texas.

What to do to be aware of snakes?

So, what can you do? Well, fist you have to be vigilant when walking your dog. Keep an eye out for the obvious, like signs that say “Rattle Snakes in the Area”. Chances are, you may not see them on them sidewalks. I like to walk my dogs off the beaten path, in the trees and river beds. If you like to walk in those areas, then you will have to pay attention to the landscape. Keep an eye open for low lying shrubs and rocky surfaces.

Image watch out for snakes sign for Scoop Masters dog poop pick up service in Frisco, Texas

What if you see a snake?

If you see a snake while taking your evening constitution, the most important thing is to make sure you have a tight grasp on your dog’s leash. You dog may see the snake as a play toy, much like a squirrel. Only squirrels don’t bite with deadly poison if your dog gets too close. Beyond that – STAY AWAY!

Snakes pretty much want to leave you alone, as long as you leave them alone. Otherwise, they may curl up and hiss at you as a way of protecting themselves. Simply walk away from them and don’t disturb them. And not to worry, the snake will not chase you. They may slither in the same direction as you are, but they’re not chasing you.

How can I train my dog in snake avoidance?

The best way to prepare for snake season is to train your dog to avoid them. There are several classes available for snake avoidance in areas where snakes pose a problem. In Austin Texas, Unleased Unlimited will help you train your dog to avoid snakes for a nominal fee. Totally worth it compared to the visit to the vet’s office.

If you’re in Los Angeles or Ventura County in California, Rattlesnake Aversion Training by natural Solutions may be the way to go. They may be based in Southern California, but they offer training nationwide.

Some municipalities hold snake aversion training once or twice a year as a free service from their parks and Recreation divisions.

Dogs Left in Cars

According to PETA, there were over 140 animals that died in overheated cars in 2025. Fortunately, twice that many were reported rescued. Of course, that’s only the reported deaths. Another source indicated that over 250 animals died in 2025 due to heat related causes.

The sad part is that people purposely leave their dogs in the car with windows cracked open. While an average of 45 children die in closed cars each year, mostly from parents forgetting they’re there.

The lesson to learn… don’t leave your dog in the car on hot days! In fact, your dog would probably like it better if you just leave it at home.

Dogs Walking on Hot sidewalks

You may not know this, but dogs usually run around in their bare feet. So, yes, the sidewalk can get pretty hot in the summer months. I have personally witnessed the hot foot dance performed by dogs. That’s what they do when the ground is hot, they try to lift their paw quickly before it burns.

Each year Scoop Masters has the privilege of working at the American Council of the Blind’s national convention. We build dog relief areas and clean up accidents inside the hotel. After all, there have been more than a couple of hundred dogs at some conventions, and they have to go somewhere.

They have had conventions in Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas and several other states. I’ve taken the ground temperatures at many locations and have measured the ground at over 145 degrees. That’s hot, even for us humans.

One way around this threat is to fit your furry friend with little booties. Yes, they make booties for dogs. No, most dogs don’t care for them. They take a little getting used to. Dogs will do a little dance because their paws can’t do their job, like feeling the ground. Or leaving its scent.

The lesson here is – be aware of the hot ground. Bend down and feel it with your hands if you’re in doubt. If you can’t keep a hand on it for more than 5 seconds, neither can your dog.

In conclusion

Use common sense when it comes to hot whether and your dog. It should go without saying, but make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water throughout the day. If you have an outside dog, have lots of shade available for your dog to rest under it. Last and not least, don’t leave your dog in the car, even for a few minutes while you run into the local 7/11 for that Big Gulp. Your dog will appreciate you.

Quick Answer

Yes, dog poop can make people sick. Dog feces may contain bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, as well as parasites like roundworms. These organisms can spread through contaminated soil or grass and may pose a higher risk to children who play in the yard. Regular pet waste removal and yard sanitation help reduce these health risks. I have to admit, some of these are pretty rare. Personally, I’ve only seen 2 cases of Guardia in my 35+ years of scooping poop.

However, If you have dogs, a little backyard mess might seem harmless. But many homeowners don’t realize that dog waste can actually carry parasites and bacteria that may make people sick. That’s especially concerning if you have kids who play outside or pets that spend time in the yard.

In this guide, we’ll explain how dog poop can affect health, the most common risks like roundworms and bacteria, and how proper cleanup and yard sanitation can help keep your family safe.

Why Dog Poop Isn’t Just a Nuisance

Dog waste is more than just unpleasant to step in—it can contain harmful microorganisms and parasites that survive in soil and grass. Puppies can poop 3 or 4 times a day. Doo the math on that one!

When dog poop sits in your yard, it can:

  • Contaminate soil
  • Attract flies and pests
  • Spread parasites to humans and other pets
  • Increase bacteria levels in outdoor spaces
  • And, don’t forget the smell!

Over time, these risks build up—especially in yards where dogs use the same areas repeatedly.

Roundworms: One of the Most Common Risks

One of the biggest health concerns associated with dog waste is roundworms.

Roundworms are intestinal parasites that can live in a dog’s digestive system and pass into the environment through their feces. Their eggs can survive in soil for months or even years.

People can accidentally ingest these microscopic eggs by:

  • Touching contaminated soil
  • Gardening without gloves
  • Kids playing in the yard and putting hands in their mouths

Once inside the body, roundworms can cause a condition called toxocariasis, which may lead to symptoms like:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Vision problems (in rare cases)

Young children are particularly vulnerable because they often play close to the ground.

Harmful Bacteria Found in Dog Waste

Dog poop can also contain bacteria that can cause illness in humans.

Some common bacteria found in dog feces include:

  • E. coli
  • Salmonella
  • Campylobacter

These bacteria can spread through contaminated soil, grass, or surfaces. If someone touches an affected area and then touches their mouth, eyes, or food, they may become infected.

Symptoms can include:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Fever

While healthy adults often recover quickly, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may be at higher risk.

Why Kids Playing Outside Increases the Risk

Backyards are a place where kids run, roll in the grass, and explore. Unfortunately, that same curiosity can increase exposure to contaminants left behind by dog waste.

Children are more likely to:

  • Touch soil and grass frequently
  • Put hands or toys in their mouths
  • Forget to wash their hands after playing

Even a small amount of contaminated soil can carry parasite eggs or bacteria.

That’s why keeping the yard clean is an important part of protecting children’s health while they enjoy outdoor playtime.

Regular Cleanup Makes a Big Difference

The simplest way to reduce these risks is consistent dog waste removal. That’s what children are for. After all, didn’t they promise to take care of Fido when they begged you to get a dog? Realistically, that simply doesn’t happen like it should. Life gets in the way, they get busy, the parents get busy and the dog poop piles up. That’s what Scoop Masters Pet Waste Removal is for. We’ve been helping pet owners take care of their pets since 1988. You can explore our Weekly Service Plans to keep your yard consistently safe and clean.

Removing dog poop quickly prevents parasites and bacteria from spreading into the soil and reduces the chance of exposure. For busy homeowners, professional pet waste removal services make it easy to keep the yard clean without the hassle.

Regular cleanup helps:

  • Lower bacteria levels in the yard
  • Prevent parasite contamination
  • Reduce flies and odors
  • Keep grass healthier

Yard Sanitation Adds an Extra Layer of Protection

Even with regular poop removal, bacteria can still linger in the grass or soil. That’s where yard sanitation treatments come in. These treatments help neutralize bacteria and reduce odors, creating a healthier outdoor environment for your family and pets. In some cases, a simple disinfecting and hosing off the residue will suffice. Scoop Masters provides both.

Our Sanitation Add-ons are designed to:

  • Kill odor-causing bacteria
  • Reduce harmful pathogens
  • Keep your lawn smelling fresh

Combined with regular waste removal, sanitation services provide a complete yard health solution.

A Cleaner Yard Is a Healthier Yard

Dog ownership brings a lot of joy, but it also comes with responsibilities—including managing pet waste properly.

Left unattended, dog poop can introduce roundworms, harmful bacteria, and contamination that may affect both people and pets. This is especially important for families with young children who spend time playing outdoors.

Keeping your yard clean with regular waste removal and sanitation helps ensure that your outdoor space stays safe, hygienic, and enjoyable for everyone.

If you’ve ever spotted a tiny blur darting across your lawn at dusk, you might have wondered: will dog poop attract mice? I already posted about dog poop attracting rats, how about their smaller cousins?

It’s not the most glamorous backyard question, but it’s an important one. Pet waste left in your yard doesn’t just affect your lawn — it can quietly invite unwanted visitors.

The short answer? Yes, dog poop can attract mice. Much like our previous article, Will Rats Eat Dog Poop, we’ll dive into more details.

Let’s break down why it happens, what it means for your home, and how to stop turning your yard into an all-you-can-eat buffet for rodents.

Why Would Mice Eat Dog Poop?

Mice aren’t picky eaters. They’re opportunistic omnivores, which means they’ll eat whatever food source is easiest and most accessible.

The most common backyard species, the House Mouse, thrives in residential areas specifically because humans unintentionally provide food.

Here’s why dog poop can attract mice:

1️ Undigested Nutrients

Dog food is often protein-rich. Not all of it gets fully digested. That means pet waste can still contain fats and proteins — valuable calories for a small rodent.

2️ Consistent Food Source

If waste isn’t removed regularly, it becomes predictable. Mice love routine feeding spots.

3️ Easy Ground Access

Unlike bird feeders or sealed trash cans, dog poop sits directly on the lawn — no climbing required.

To a mouse, that’s convenience dining.

Does Dog Poop Alone Cause a Mouse Infestation?

Not exactly.

Dog poop won’t magically create mice. But if mice are already in your neighborhood (and they usually are), leaving pet waste in your yard makes it more attractive than your neighbor’s yard.

And once mice find food, they start looking for shelter.

That’s when they:

  • Nest under decks or sheds
  • Burrow near foundations
  • Slip into garages
  • Explore crawl spaces

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rodents can contaminate areas with droppings and urine, increasing potential health risks.

So while dog poop may seem harmless sitting in the grass, it can indirectly support a larger problem.

Why Mice in Your Yard Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think

A single mouse sighting isn’t uncommon. But mice reproduce quickly.

One female mouse can produce multiple litters per year. If your yard provides food, you’re essentially supporting population growth.

And here’s the twist — once mice are comfortable outside, they often explore inside.

Your warm garage suddenly looks very appealing.

What Other Factors Make It Worse?

Dog poop isn’t usually the only factor. It often works in combination with:

  • Fallen bird seed
  • Open trash bins
  • Outdoor pet food bowls
  • Dense shrubs and woodpiles

When you remove one food source (like pet waste), you dramatically reduce the yard’s overall attractiveness.

That’s why consistent cleanup matters.

How Quickly Can Dog Poop Attract Mice?

If mice are already nearby, it doesn’t take long.

Mice have an excellent sense of smell and forage nightly. A yard with regularly unattended pet waste can become part of their routine feeding route within days.

The longer waste sits, the higher the likelihood of repeat visits.

How to Keep Mice Out of Your Yard

The good news? Prevention is simple.

Scoop Daily

The single most effective step is consistent removal. When food disappears, mice move on.

If daily cleanup isn’t realistic, this is exactly where a Dog Poop Removal Service makes life easier. Routine service keeps your yard clean before pests take notice.

Secure Trash Bins

Use tight-fitting lids and durable containers.

Remove Shelter Spots

Trim shrubs, clear debris, and seal gaps under sheds.

Don’t Leave Pet Food Outdoors

Even small amounts can attract rodents.

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends eliminating food sources as the foundation of integrated pest prevention.

In simple terms: no food, no freeloaders.

Is Dog Poop Worse Than Other Food Sources?

Mice will always prefer grains and seeds first. However, in suburban environments where those aren’t readily available, pet waste becomes a convenient substitute.

It’s not necessarily their favorite meal — but it’s available. And availability often wins.

What About Health Risks?

Mice can carry bacteria and parasites that contaminate soil. If your dog sniffs, digs, or eats grass in areas where rodents frequent, there’s potential for exposure.

Children playing barefoot in the yard could also encounter contaminated areas.

That’s why regular cleanup protects more than just your lawn’s appearance.

It protects your household.

Will Dog Poop Attract Mice More in Certain Seasons?

Yes.

Think about it. Fall and winter are especially high-risk periods because:

  • Natural food sources decline
  • Rodents search for stable feeding grounds
  • Mice begin looking for warm shelter

If pet waste is available during colder months, your yard can become a strategic stop before mice attempt to move indoors.

Year-round maintenance prevents seasonal surprises.

The Bottom Line: Will Dog Poop Attract Mice?

Yes, dog poop can attract mice — especially when left in the yard consistently.

It provides:

  • Nutrients
  • Easy access
  • Predictable feeding

And while it may not single-handedly cause an infestation, it absolutely increases the odds of rodent activity near your home.

The simplest solution? Remove the invitation. Regular cleanup keeps your yard:

  • Cleaner
  • Healthier
  • Less attractive to pests
  • More enjoyable for your family

At Scoop Masters, we believe your yard should smell like fresh air — not like a rodent food court.

Because your backyard should be a place for fetch and fresh air — not tiny midnight snackers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will dog poop attract mice?

Yes. Dog poop contains undigested nutrients that can serve as a food source for mice, especially if left in the yard regularly.

Does picking up dog poop prevent mice?

Removing dog waste reduces one major food source. While it doesn’t eliminate all rodent risks, it significantly lowers your yard’s attractiveness.

How often should I pick up dog poop to prevent pests?

Daily removal is ideal. At minimum, pet waste should be picked up multiple times per week to reduce odor, bacteria, and pest attraction.

Most dog owners expect to see brown, well-formed stools. When your dog’s poop turns white or chalky, it can be alarming. The first reaction is often panic: is this dangerous? The truth is, white dog poop can mean several things, from something as simple as diet to more serious digestive or organ issues. Understanding the causes and implications can save your dog discomfort and prevent long-term health problems. Let’s dive in.

What Does White Dog Poop Mean?

White or chalky stool usually indicates an imbalance in bile production, excessive calcium, or other digestive issues. Bile is what gives dog poop its brown color. When bile is reduced or absent, stool becomes pale or white. In some cases, it’s temporary and harmless. In others, it’s a sign your dog’s liver, pancreas, or digestive system isn’t functioning properly.

Common Causes of White or Chalky Dog Stool

Several factors can change the color and texture of your dog’s stool:

  1. Dietary Changes – Dogs on high-calcium diets or consuming bones frequently can develop chalky white stool.
  2. Medications or Supplements – Certain antacids or calcium supplements may temporarily alter stool color.
  3. Digestive Disorders – Poor fat absorption or pancreatic insufficiency can result in pale stools.
  4. Liver or Gallbladder Issues – When bile flow is blocked, stool loses its normal brown pigment.
  5. Chronic Dehydration – Reduced water intake can make stool harder and paler.

Is White Dog Poop Normal or a Health Concern?

Image of woman in vets office looking concerned over dog poop that is white.

Occasional pale stool might not be alarming if your dog is otherwise healthy, eating well, and active. However, persistent white or chalky poop, especially if accompanied by diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, or weight loss, warrants a closer look. For a reliable diagnosis, observing the stool over a few days and noting any additional symptoms is essential.

Role of Diet in Turning Dog Poop White

Diet is one of the most common reasons for temporary changes in stool color. Dogs consuming high-calcium foods, excessive bones, or certain mineral-rich treats often pass chalky stools. A sudden diet change can also temporarily affect stool color as the digestive system adapts.

Owners focusing on healthy dog food should ensure it’s balanced and not overly rich in calcium or other minerals that can lighten stool.

Can Too Much Calcium Cause White Dog Poop?

Yes. Excess calcium intake—through diet, supplements, or chewing bones—can result in hard, chalky, or white stool. Puppies, in particular, are sensitive to calcium imbalances, which may affect both stool color and bone development. While calcium is essential, too much can interfere with digestion and indicate that portion sizes or treats need adjusting.

White Dog Poop and Dehydration: Is There a Link?

Dehydration makes stool denser and paler, sometimes giving it a white appearance. Dogs that aren’t drinking enough water, especially in hot weather or during illness, may produce crumbly stools. Hydration is a simple yet often overlooked factor that affects stool quality. Encourage regular water intake, and consider adding wet food to maintain moisture balance.

Does White Dog Poop Indicate Digestive Problems?

Pale or white stool can point to fat malabsorption, infections, or digestive enzyme deficiencies. Conditions like exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) prevent proper digestion, leading to chalky or greasy stools. Occasional episodes may not be serious, but persistent changes are worth investigating with a veterinarian.

When White Dog Poop Is a Sign of Liver or Pancreatic Issues

If white stools are persistent and accompanied by yellowing gums or eyes, vomiting, or lethargy, liver or pancreatic problems could be the culprit. These organs are critical for producing bile and digestive enzymes. Without proper bile flow, stool loses its brown pigment and becomes pale or clay-colored. Early detection is key to managing liver or pancreatic disease effectively.

Should You Be Concerned About Hard, Crumbly White Stool?

Hard, crumbly, or chalky stools indicate more than just a color change. They suggest dehydration, excessive calcium, or digestive inefficiency. Persistent hardness can lead to constipation, discomfort, and strain during defecation. Monitoring your dog’s stool consistency along with color provides valuable insight into overall health. This is something a professional pooper scooper company should notify you about, if you choose to hire one.

When to Call the Vet About White Dog Poop

Call a veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following along with white stool:

  • Lethargy or sudden behavior changes
  • Vomiting or persistent chronic diarrhea
  • Yellowing of gums, eyes, or skin
  • Loss of appetite or rapid weight loss
  • Hard, crumbly stools that persist for several days

Even if the stool is soft but consistently pale, a vet can run tests to rule out liver, pancreatic, or digestive disorders. For less urgent issues, your vet may advise dietary adjustments or hydration strategies. Regular monitoring is key.

Practical Checklist for Dog Owners

  • Track stool color, consistency, and frequency daily.
  • Ensure your dog has access to fresh water at all times.
  • Review calcium intake from diet, treats, and supplements.
  • Note any additional symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, or appetite changes.
  • Schedule veterinary consultation if white stool persists more than a few days.
  • Avoid sudden diet changes and introduce new foods gradually.
  • Educate yourself on common canine digestive disorders or explore veterinary relief jobs for more in-depth understanding.

White dog poop isn’t always a crisis, but it’s never something to ignore. Observing, documenting, and consulting a vet when needed ensures your dog stays healthy and comfortable. Paying attention to diet, hydration, and overall behavior gives early clues to prevent serious health issues.

A backyard often becomes the heart of a home once dogs and babies enter the picture. It’s where morning sunshine meets wagging tails, where early steps turn into confident strides, and where families gather for simple moments.

While most single-family housing units have backyards, they are also gaining traction in tiny homes. Small backyard homes, known as accessory dwelling units (ADUs), are becoming popular across the United States thanks to recent zoning reforms and streamlined permitting. These compact, self-contained living spaces offer homeowners potential increased property value and flexible living options.

Keeping that space clean supports comfort, safety, and peace of mind, especially when different needs overlap in one shared environment. As children grow, they explore the outdoors with their hands, feet, and curiosity that doesn’t pause to consider what might be on the ground. Dogs, on the other hand, experience the same space through scent, digging, and play.

Balancing both means thinking about hygiene in a broader way, one that goes beyond appearances and focuses on how the yard supports healthy routines.

How Outdoor Play Supports Growth for Kids and Pets

Time spent outside plays a meaningful role in how both children and dogs develop. A report also highlights research showing that children who grow up with a family dog tend to be more physically active, especially young girls. A study of 600 kids found that acquiring a dog was linked to nearly an extra hour of light-intensity activity per day for girls.

Dogs benefit in similar ways, using outdoor play to release energy, practice social behavior, and stay physically active. Growth, however, isn’t shaped by movement alone. For young children, this often brings attention to early nutrition and breastfeeding.

But despite its importance, only 27% of US babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months. Moreover, less than 40% of the babies receive breastfeeding for up to a year. Many moms choose alternatives to breast milk, such as baby formula, which, as highlighted by TorHoerman Law, can lead to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Some parents have alleged that certain baby formula products have led to the development of NEC.

These parents are trying to hold the manufacturers responsible for this through the NEC baby formula lawsuit. Just like kids, dogs also need proper nutrition and care to move around freely in the backyard.

Therefore, creating a safe, clean outdoor space becomes another way families support the overall health of both their children and their pets.

How does outdoor play influence emotional development in children and dogs?

Time outside can help children build confidence and reduce stress through open-ended exploration and sensory experiences. For pets, outdoor activity supports emotional balance by providing stimulation and opportunities for positive social interaction. These shared experiences can also strengthen the bond between children and their pets, shaping empathy and communication skills over time.

Creating Simple Habits That Keep the Yard Fresh

Consistency matters more than complexity when it comes to outdoor cleanliness. A few minutes each day can prevent small issues from becoming bigger ones. Removing pet waste regularly keeps the grass healthier and reduces lingering odors that can attract insects or create uncomfortable conditions for play.

Pet feces can also carry harmful parasites and pathogens that spread disease to humans, wildlife, and other animals. Microscopic larvae from hookworms and roundworms can enter through the skin or accidental ingestion and potentially cause anemia, intestinal obstruction, blindness, and other serious infections.

They also pose risks to pets through organisms such as whipworm and Giardia. This underscores the importance of responsible cleanup and parasite prevention to reduce health hazards.

Watering and mowing also play a role. Shorter grass dries faster, which can help limit the spread of bacteria in damp areas. Rinsing high-traffic spots, such as where dogs like to rest or where children often sit with toys, can refresh the space and make it more pleasant.

These habits blend easily into everyday routines. Just as families create schedules for feeding, walks, and nap times, yard care can become another small rhythm that supports a smoother day.

How can families maintain yard care routines during busy weeks or travel periods?

Planning ahead can make a difference. Setting reminders, asking a neighbor for help, or scheduling professional services can prevent lapses in upkeep. Even short, scheduled check-ins before or after trips can stop small issues from growing into larger problems that require more time and effort to fix later.

Designing a Space That Encourages Safe Exploration

The way a backyard is arranged can influence how children and dogs interact with it. Open areas allow for running and games, while shaded corners offer calm spots for rest. Clear pathways reduce tripping hazards and help guide movement through the space.

Adding simple features like soft ground coverings in play zones can make a noticeable difference. Grass, mulch, or outdoor mats can cushion falls and create a defined area where children can explore more freely.

For dogs, having designated play or digging spots can help protect the rest of the yard from wear and tear. It is also important to be careful when choosing which cleaning agent or product you use for the backyard. While many may be safe to use for humans, they can cause health problems for your dogs.

You should also designate a potty space, choose the right plants, and provide shade to make the backyard dog-friendly. The goal is to shape the environment so it naturally supports how your family uses it, rather than constantly correcting behavior.

How can lighting improve backyard safety for evening play or pet time?

Soft, well-placed lighting helps families see potential obstacles and monitor movement after sunset. Pathway lights, motion sensors, or low garden lamps can guide walking routes and highlight play zones without being harsh. This added visibility supports safer navigation for both children and pets during low-light hours.

Teaching Kids and Setting Routines for Pets

A clean backyard becomes easier to maintain when children and pets are part of the process in age-appropriate ways. As kids grow, simple lessons about where to play and how to treat the yard can build awareness. Dogs benefit from routines that guide where they go and how they move through space.

These small practices create a sense of shared responsibility within the household. Over time, they help shape a backyard that reflects the care put into it, making outdoor time feel less like a task and more like a natural part of family life.

Another way to reinforce these routines is through simple, shared activities that make outdoor care feel like a family moment rather than a task. Letting children help with age-appropriate jobs, such as carrying a small watering can, can build a sense of pride in the space they use every day.

For pets, pairing yard time with consistent cues and positive reinforcement helps them associate certain areas with rest, play, or bathroom habits. Over time, these small, repeated actions shape a rhythm that keeps the backyard orderly while teaching everyone how their role contributes to a cleaner, more enjoyable place.

Backyards change as families do. What starts as a place for crawling and short walks can turn into a space for games, training, and longer afternoons outdoors. Keeping it clean and comfortable allows it to evolve along with those moments.

A thoughtful approach to yard care supports more than appearances. It creates an environment where dogs can play freely, babies can explore safely, and families can enjoy simple, meaningful time together. With steady habits and a focus on everyday comfort, the backyard becomes a true extension of home, ready for whatever stage of life comes next.

Dog ownership brings joy and companionship, but it also comes with responsibilities—especially when it comes to keeping your yard safe for children. Dog feces can harbor bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens that pose health risks to both pets and family members. Understanding these risks and adopting proper waste management practices is essential for a family-friendly environment. Children always say they’ll clean up after the dog when exploring the chance to get a new pet. Let’s explore what that entails and how to be safe about it.

For veterinary professionals exploring career opportunities, platforms like Veterinarian Jobs provide structured access to employment and specialized positions, helping clinics and hospitals maintain safer, well-staffed environments for pets and families alike. Why this plug? Because this article was written with the help of veterinarian professionals to make sure all the information is accurate and up to date.

Why Dog Waste Is a Health Concern

Dog feces can contain harmful bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella, as well as parasites like roundworms and hookworms. And let’s not forget Giardia. These microorganisms can survive in soil for weeks and, if ingested, may lead to infections in children and adults. Children are particularly vulnerable because they often play on the ground and may accidentally put contaminated hands or objects in their mouths.

Even seemingly small amounts of dog waste left in the yard can accumulate and create hotspots for bacterial growth. Regular cleaning and proper disposal are essential to reducing potential exposure and preventing zoonotic infections—diseases that transfer between animals and humans. More details of each of these parasites can be found on the Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists’ website, or aPaws for short.

Safe Dog Waste Management Practices

Veterinarians recommend the following strategies for keeping your yard hygienic and safe for children:

  1. Frequent Removal
Pick up dog feces daily or at least every other day. Using disposable gloves or specialized scoops helps minimize contact with bacteria.
  2. Proper Disposal
Seal waste in plastic bags before disposal or use dedicated pet waste bins. Avoid composting untreated dog feces, as it can contaminate soil and spread pathogens.
  3. Sanitize Affected Areas
After removing waste, wash your hands thoroughly and, if necessary, rinse areas where children frequently play with water or pet-safe disinfectants.
  4. Designated Potty Areas
Training your dog to use a specific area of the yard reduces the spread of bacteria across frequently used spaces.
  5. Monitoring Children’s Play
Supervising children outdoors and teaching handwashing after contact with soil or pets minimizes risk.

Scoop Masters pet waste removal service can help with the first 3! That’s what we doo. The last 2? Well, that would be up to you and your dog trainer.

Signs of Exposure to Harmful Pathogens

infographic showing pathogens found in dog waste and the effect on humans. Includes e-coli, salmonella, roundworms, hookworms.

Even with precautions, it’s important to recognize potential signs of exposure. In children and pets, these may include:

  • Gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea or vomiting
  • Fever or lethargy
  • Skin irritation or rashes
  • Persistent coughing or respiratory symptoms

Prompt veterinary consultation or medical advice is recommended if any of these symptoms appear after exposure.

Environmental Considerations

Dog waste not only affects family health but also the environment. Nutrients in feces can contribute to water contamination if not properly managed. Excess waste may lead to unpleasant odors, encourage flies, and increase bacterial load in soil. A well-maintained yard enhances both aesthetics and safety.

Veterinary insights emphasize the importance of combining hygiene with enrichment activities that keep pets mentally and physically stimulated while minimizing exposure risks. For example, creating a designated potty zone or rotating play areas helps reduce soil contamination.

Role of Veterinary Professionals in Education

Veterinarians are often the first point of guidance for families regarding pet waste and zoonotic risks. Educating pet owners on:

  • Safe disposal practices
  • Infection risks associated with dog feces
  • Preventive treatments for parasites

This is where platforms like Veterinary Product Wholesalers come in. They supply clinics with the proper sanitation tools, cleaning agents, and protective equipment to manage pet waste safely and effectively.

Choosing the Right Tools for Pet Waste Management

Selecting appropriate tools simplifies yard maintenance and improves safety:

  • Scoops and pooper-scoopers: Reduce hand contact with waste.
  • Gloves and disposable bags: Essential for hygiene.
  • Sanitizers and disinfectants: Pet-safe solutions for cleaning contaminated surfaces.
  • Pet waste bins: Closed, designated containers prevent bacteria from spreading.

Regular inspection of equipment and rotating play areas ensures that children and pets interact with safe, clean surfaces. For the truly lazy folks out there, Scoop Masters offers pet waste bin maintenance to empty it out, disinfect it and replace the bag. OK, you don’t actually have to be lazy, but we do offer this service and many of our clients take advantage of it.

Educating the Whole Family

Teaching children about the risks of dog waste and the importance of hygiene is critical. Simple practices include:

  • Washing hands after outdoor play
  • Avoiding bare-foot contact with soil in areas where pets relieve themselves
  • Keeping toys and picnic areas separate from pet potty zones

These steps reduce potential exposure while maintaining a positive and responsible relationship with pets.

Veterinary Perspective on Yard Safety

From a veterinary standpoint, integrating preventive strategies is key. Veterinarians recommend:

  • Routine parasite prevention for pets
  • Vaccinations to reduce disease risk
  • Scheduled vet visits to monitor pet health

These measures protect both pets and family members while supporting a healthy home environment. Professionals often use these recommendations to guide clients in creating a family-safe backyard without limiting a dog’s outdoor activity.

Conclusion

Keeping a yard safe from dog waste bacteria is a combination of proper hygiene, education, and preventive care. Frequent removal, designated potty areas, proper disposal, and family awareness are the pillars of a healthy backyard. Veterinary guidance ensures both pets and children are protected, while tools supplied through Veterinary Product Wholesalers help clinics maintain high standards of sanitation and care.

By implementing these practices, families can enjoy a clean, safe outdoor space while providing a stimulating environment for their dogs. Combining veterinary knowledge with practical solutions creates a sustainable, family-friendly approach to pet ownership.

Vet-Approved Grain Free Picks for Healthy Pups

If you’re like most pet parents, you’re always looking for the very best food to keep your dog healthy, happy, and full of energy. And with so many brands out there, it can feel totally overwhelming trying to choose the right one, especially if your pup needs something grain-free.

You might’ve noticed that more and more people are switching their dogs to grain-free diets, and it’s not just a trendy buzzword anymore. It actually makes a lot of sense for some pups, especially those with grain allergies, sensitive stomachs, or skin issues that just won’t go away no matter what shampoo you use.

But here’s the deal: not all grain-free dog foods are created equal, and some of them replace grains with cheap fillers like potatoes and peas. This doesn’t always offer the best nutritional punch your dog needs. Even worse, corn. Corn meal, corn gluten meal, ground corn, basically anything with corn. Even though it has some nutritional value, corn is mostly a filler and not always beneficial for your dog.

That’s why we teamed up with vets, nutritionists, and real pet owners to put together a list of the 10 best grain-free dog foods of 2025 that are totally worth your money and approved by professionals who know their stuff.

Let’s break them down one by one, so you can pick the one that’ll make your dog’s tail wag with joy.

1. Wellness CORE Grain-Free Original Deboned Turkey & Chicken Recipe

If your dog is super active and needs a protein-rich diet to keep up with their lifestyle, this one’s a winner. Wellness CORE has been a long-time favorite among both pet owners and vets, and for good reason. This grain-free recipe is packed with premium deboned turkey, chicken meal, and turkey meal to support lean muscle mass. Plus it’s completely free of any grains, corn, soy, or artificial junk. It’s loaded with omega fatty acids from flaxseed and salmon oil, which makes your pup’s coat look glossy and soft. Along with the added probiotics help with digestion, so even sensitive stomachs can usually handle it just fine.

2. Blue Buffalo Wilderness High Protein Grain-Free Chicken Recipe

If you’ve got a dog that’s more on the wild side (in the best way), this one’s a great match. Blue Buffalo Wilderness is designed to mimic the diet of wolves. It’s full of real chicken, sweet potatoes, and healthy fruits and veggies that give your dog the energy they need without any unnecessary grains. What’s really cool is that it contains their special LifeSource Bits, a mix of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that are cold-formed to preserve nutrients and support your dog’s immune system. Plus, it’s got no poultry by-products, wheat, corn, or soy, which is a major plus if you’re trying to avoid allergy triggers.

3. Taste of the Wild High Prairie Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

For the dogs that dream of running through open fields or hiking mountain trails (or maybe just the backyard), Taste of the Wild’s High Prairie formula brings the wild to their food bowl. This grain-free option features unique proteins like roasted bison and roasted venison, which are super digestible and rich in amino acids to keep your pup strong and healthy. It also includes peas and sweet potatoes for complex carbs, and the real standout here is the proprietary K9 Strain Probiotics, specifically developed for dogs to promote a healthy gut. It’s ideal for dogs with food sensitivities or allergies and gives off a bit of a gourmet vibe while still being totally down to earth.

4. Merrick Grain-Free Texas Beef & Sweet Potato Recipe

If your dog is all about bold flavors, then Merrick’s Grain-Free Texas Beef recipe is going to be their new favorite. This recipe starts with real deboned beef as the first ingredient, followed by lamb meal and salmon meal, giving it a rich protein profile that helps support lean muscle mass, joint health, and sustained energy. Sweet potatoes are the main source of carbs here, and there’s a healthy dose of apples and blueberries to round out the recipe with antioxidants and fiber. Pet parents love that it’s made in Merrick’s Texas kitchens without any corn, wheat, soy, or gluten. The glucosamine and chondroitin levels are among the best out there for keeping your dog’s joints in great shape.

5. Canidae PURE Limited Ingredient Grain-Free Salmon & Sweet Potato

Got a dog with food allergies, itchy skin, or a super sensitive belly? Canidae PURE is a total game-changer. This recipe is crafted with only 8 key ingredients, starting with real salmon, so you know exactly what your dog’s eating and it’s loaded with omega-3s for skin and coat health. Sweet potatoes offer a digestible energy source, and the lack of corn, wheat, soy, or artificial additives makes it easier on digestion, which is great for pups who’ve had tummy troubles in the past. Canidae also adds in a blend of probiotics, antioxidants, and vitamins that help round out the nutrition, and the limited-ingredient approach just makes feeding simpler and smarter.

6. Orijen Original Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

If you want to feed your dog like royalty, Orijen’s Original Grain-Free food is about as premium as it gets. It’s biologically appropriate, which basically means it’s made to mirror the natural diet of dogs in the wild, featuring a whopping 85% animal ingredients including free-run chicken and turkey, wild-caught fish, and cage-free eggs. The first five ingredients are all fresh or raw animal protein, which is incredibly rare and impressive, and the freeze-dried coating gives it a flavor boost that picky eaters can’t resist. It doesn’t come cheap, but if you’re investing in top-tier nutrition, this is the kind of food that can really transform your dog’s overall health.

7. Nature’s Logic Canine Chicken Meal Feast

Nature’s Logic is different from a lot of grain-free foods because they skip the synthetic vitamins and minerals and rely entirely on natural, whole-food ingredients for nutrition. The chicken meal used here is highly digestible and sourced from USA-raised chickens, and instead of fillers or artificial stuff, they use things like dried kelp, pumpkin seed, and spinach to give your dog everything they need. This recipe’s also made without common allergens like corn, wheat, rice, soy, or potatoes, making it ideal for sensitive pups who need a truly clean diet. And here’s a bonus: they’re eco-conscious and use sustainable packaging, which makes pet parents feel good about their purchase in more ways than one.

8. Instinct Raw Boost Grain-Free Recipe with Real Chicken

If you’ve ever thought about feeding your dog raw food but weren’t sure where to start, Instinct’s Raw Boost gives you the best of both worlds. This grain-free kibble is mixed with freeze-dried raw pieces of cage-free chicken, giving your pup that protein boost and raw nutrition while still being convenient to scoop and serve. It includes probiotics for gut health, omegas for skin and coat, and antioxidants for immunity, so it checks all the boxes without being overly complicated. Dogs go wild for the texture combo, and it’s perfect for adding variety to your dog’s meals without totally overhauling their routine.

9. Nutro Ultra Grain-Free Trio Protein Blend

Nutro Ultra is kind of like a fancy dinner for your dog, it combines high-quality proteins like chicken, lamb, and salmon with a blend of superfoods like coconut, chia seeds, and kale. Mmm, kale! This grain-free recipe is made without any GMO ingredients, artificial flavors, or preservatives, and it’s packed with antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats to support everything from digestion to brain health. It’s especially good for picky eaters who might get bored with standard chicken or beef flavors because the trio protein mix gives it a richer, more interesting taste. It’s made in the USA and backed by the Nutro Feed Clean philosophy, which focuses on simple, purposeful ingredients with no fluff or fillers.

10. Solid Gold Leaping Waters Sensitive Stomach Grain-Free with Cold Water Salmon

Last but absolutely not least is a brand that’s been flying under the radar but deserves major attention Solid Gold’s Leaping Waters formula is specially made for dogs with sensitive digestion and skin. It features cold water salmon as the main protein, combined with wholesome ingredients like chickpeas, peas, pumpkin, and apples for a nourishing, gentle meal. This recipe also includes a blend of 20 superfoods like blueberries and broccoli, plus Solid Gold’s patented probiotics that help support a healthy microbiome. If your dog’s ever had bouts of gas, diarrhea, or skin irritation, this one might just be the soothing fix you’ve been looking for.

Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing Grain-Free Dog Food

Okay, now that we’ve gone through the top picks, here are a few quick tips to keep in mind before switching your dog to a grain-free diet:

  • Talk to your vet first, especially if your dog has a medical condition or you’re unsure if grain-free is the right choice.
  • Look for whole meat as the first ingredient, and try to avoid meat by-products or vague labels like “animal meal.”
  • Make sure the food is AAFCO-approved, which means it meets the standard nutritional requirements for your dog’s life stage.
  • Don’t be fooled by marketing, just because something says “grain-free” doesn’t automatically make it healthy. Always check the ingredient list and nutrient profile.
  • If you’re transitioning from a regular kibble, do it gradually over 7–10 days to avoid upsetting your dog’s stomach.

Final Thoughts

Feeding your dog a healthy grain-free diet doesn’t have to be complicated or crazy expensive, it’s all about finding the right formula that suits your dog’s unique needs, preferences, and health conditions. Whether your pup is dealing with allergies, has a sensitive stomach, or just seems to thrive better without grains, one of these ten vet-approved picks could be the perfect match to help them live their healthiest, happiest life. And hey, while you’re shopping for premium dog food, maybe treat yourself to a little snack too, something like farmer jon’s popcorn never hurts.

A Practical Guide to Launching Your Own Eco-Friendly In-Home Pet Care
Business

Starting a green pet care business doesn’t begin with products — it begins with purpose. What drives your service isn’t just a love of animals, but a clear commitment to sustainability that customers can feel in every interaction. That starts with how you talk about your mission — clearly, locally, and with proof behind the claims. If you’re serious about standing out in a crowded market, it’s not enough to say you care about the planet; you have to show how. A strong green identity creates customer trust before you even meet their pet. And the moment you begin articulating this through services, policies, and partnerships, you’ve already done more than most.

Define a Green Mission That Sticks

Eco-friendly branding only works if it connects with a real set of values. What matters most is that your mission isn’t vague — it’s specific enough to act on. You’re not just “eco-aware,” you’re using compostable bags, walking routes instead of short car trips, and partnering with sustainable vendors. Start by writing that mission down in plain language. Make sure it explains your values, your actions, and how those two connect. Then, build your whole business to reflect launching an eco-friendly pet care business.

Eco-Conscious Pet Waste Practices

If you’re in the pet care space, waste is unavoidable — but how you handle it makes all the difference. Move beyond plastic bags and scented gimmicks. Partner with experienced services like Scoopmasters, educate your clients, and implement eco-conscious pet waste practices that reduce landfill impact and improve sanitation. You don’t have to overhaul the industry — just set an example. Be the provider who explains what “flushable” really means, or who offers a composting option. Small shifts in how you deal with mess make a big impression.

Make Operations Match the Mission

Too many pet care startups claim “eco-friendly” without adjusting their operations. Swap single-use pet wipes for washable cloths, and replace toxic sprays with plant-based cleaners that won’t harm animals or the environment. Choose cruelty-free shampoos that biodegrade and leave no trace in the water system. This is where sustainable practice meets daily action, and where your values get tested. If your gear and supplies don’t match your marketing, your clients will notice. What sets apart truly conscious businesses are the eco-friendly practices that make a difference.

Leverage Business Management Experiential Learning

Eco values won’t carry a business if you’re not trained to run one. Sustainable pet care demands long-term thinking, planning, and operational discipline. A bachelor of business management experiential learning track can ground your passion in real-world practices — from marketing plans to cost forecasting. Don’t skip the fundamentals just because your mission is heartfelt. Learning how to hire, scale, and systematize your service is what turns a one-person dog-walking gig into a company with legs. And you’ll need every skill if you want to grow without compromising your values.

Understand Regulations Before You Break Them

Eco is not a loophole — it’s a commitment that must align with real policies. When you’re setting up your pet care business, don’t skip the part where you dig into local ordinances around animal waste, greywater runoff, and chemical usage. Getting this wrong could put your business — and the environment — at risk. Use your compliance as a competitive advantage, especially if you’re targeting clients who already care about sustainability. It shows you’re not just following the rules — you’re leading with them. Stay updated on green policies in pet care to stay aligned and protected.

Budget With Sustainability in Mind

Running an eco-focused pet care operation isn’t just a branding decision — it’s a budgeting one too. You’ll need to allocate funds not just for eco-friendly supplies, but also for marketing, certifications, and sustainable transportation. This isn’t about cutting corners — it’s about making choices that align with your brand and your future. Financial planning becomes the backbone of your green mission, helping you balance principle with practicality. You’re not just managing money; you’re building resilience. Here’s how to budget smart for a pet care business without losing sight of your values.

Tell a Story That Your Customers Can Feel

Eco-friendly businesses often stumble in how they explain themselves. You don’t need a thesis — you need a story. Talk about how you choose your materials, why you walk instead of drive, how your composting system works. Use social media to show the quiet details that add up to a sustainable experience. Marketing is where your mission gets personal, and your clients want to see that. Learn from these pet marketing strategies that connect and build a following that’s aligned with your vision.

You don’t need a massive team or a tech stack to start a sustainable pet care service — you need focus. Get clear on your mission, build systems that reflect it, and choose your resources wisely. Let your values shape everything: from your scheduling app to your poop bags. Talk openly about how you operate and why it matters. Your customers will care more if they can see what you do differently. And in a world crowded with options, being clear, consistent, and genuinely green is what will keep them coming back.

Ah, the Fourth of July: America’s favorite excuse to grill hot dogs, wear flag-themed everything, and light up the sky like a war zone. For humans, it’s a celebration. For dogs? It’s basically the apocalypse. If you’ve ever seen your dog panic at a mere thunderclap, imagine how they feel when the sky randomly explodes for hours while their humans cheer and eat potato salad. Not fun. So, this July 4th, let’s talk about how to keep your four-legged friend safe, calm, and maybe even slightly sane while we enjoy the festivities.

Why Fireworks Freak Dogs Out

Let’s start with the technical basics: Dogs hear way better than we do. Humans can hear up to about 20,000 Hz. Dogs? Up to 65,000 Hz. That means when a firework goes off, it’s not just “loud” to them — it’s a full-body assault of BOOM. And they don’t know it’s for fun. You can’t exactly explain to them that “Don’t worry, Sparky, it’s just America celebrating freedom by blowing things up in the air.” All they know is: sky make big noise, I must hide in bathtub now, because I won’t fit under the bed.

Dog Breeds: Who Handles Fireworks Best (and Worst)?

Not all dogs react the same way to fireworks. Some are cool cucumbers. Others turn into trembling, panting, furry puddles.

Breeds That Tend to Cope Well With Fireworks:

  • Retrievers (Golden, Labrador): Often more chill and used to hunting noises.
  • Bulldogs & Pugs: These couch potatoes may not be thrilled, but they’re also not exactly athletic enough to panic-jump through windows.
  • Greyhounds: Surprisingly calm in chaotic environments, especially retired racers.

Breeds That Are More Sensitive:

  • Border Collies & Australian Shepherds: Super smart, super aware — and often super anxious. Did I mention super hyper?
  • Chihuahuas: Born to panic. Loud noises? Absolutely not. My Chihuahua started shaking when hail was hitting the roof during the last storm.
  • German Shepherds: Protective and alert — sometimes a bit too alert.
  • Shih Tzus & Yorkies: These small dogs often have a big fear of loud sounds.

Of course, every dog is different. One Labrador might nap through a fireworks finale; another might try to dig a tunnel to Canada. Breed is just one part of the equation. Training has a lot to do with it too. I work with several guide dogs who do surprising well during the July fourth celebrations.

Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe & Calm During Fireworks

🐾 1. Get Ahead of It

Don’t wait until dusk on the 4th to prepare. Check local fireworks schedules — some neighborhoods or towns celebrate on different days. And be aware of your town’s local ordinances – are ordinances (fireworks) legal to set off in your neighborhood? Start setting up your dog’s safe zone a few days in advance. This could be a cozy crate, a closet, or a corner with blankets and their favorite toys. The idea is to create a den-like environment where they can hide (and feel in control).

🐾 2. Close the Windows, Close the Curtains

The sound is bad enough, but the flashing lights can make things worse. Keep your windows shut and curtains drawn to muffle the noise and block the strobe show.

Bonus: it also keeps your dog from trying to jump through the window to escape. Yes, that happens.

🐾 3. ID Tags & Microchips

Every year, shelters report a spike in runaway pets on July 4th. Make sure your dog’s collar has up-to-date ID tags and that they’re microchipped, just in case they try to do their best Houdini impression.

🐾 4. Background Noise Helps

A little white noise or soothing music can go a long way. Some people swear by reggae, classical music, or even dog-calming playlists. (Yes, those exist. Try searching for “Spotify for Dogs.”) Or just leave the TV on with something boring and predictable — maybe a documentary about left-handed accordion music. Maybe even bagpipes! Your dog will wish for fireworks at that point.  Basically, anything that makes fireworks less noticeable.

🐾 5. Try a Thundershirt or Compression Wrap

These tight-fitting garments apply gentle pressure to your dog’s torso, kind of like a weighted blanket. It can help calm anxiety — and make your dog look like they’re ready for a workout montage.

🐾 6. Treats, Toys & Distractions

Give them something to focus on besides the terrifying sky war. Frozen Kongs filled with peanut butter, long-lasting chews, or puzzle toys are great. (But skip the squeaky toys — they’ll just add more noise to the chaos.) If your pet is the drinking type, perhaps a shot of good Tequila will do the trick. OK, maybe not, that’s more for me.

🐾 7. Don’t Punish. Don’t Over-Reassure.

If your dog is losing it, don’t scold them — fear isn’t disobedience. But also, don’t overdo the “It’s okay, it’s okay, you’re okay!” routine. That can accidentally reinforce the idea that something really is wrong. Instead, stay calm, act normal, and be the grounded, chill pack leader they need.

🐾 8. Talk to Your Vet

If your dog has an especially rough time with fireworks, ask your vet about anti-anxiety meds or calming supplements. There are even pheromone diffusers that mimic a dog mother’s calming scent (basically doggy aromatherapy).

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t bring your dog to the fireworks show. Even if they “did fine last year,” one loud bang too close can change everything.
  • Don’t leave them outside. Ever. Even fenced yards are no match for a panicked dog in flight mode.
  • Don’t assume they’ll be fine. Even the most chill dog can have a bad reaction, especially as they age.

After the Fireworks: A Quick Check-In

Once the chaos is over, give your dog some love, a potty break, and a chance to decompress. If they’ve been hiding under the bed for two hours, they’ll appreciate some cuddles, water, and maybe a leftover hot dog (just hold the onions). And hey, if they were super brave this year, give them an extra treat, like the shot of Tequila mentioned earlier. Bravery comes in all shapes and sizes.

In Conclusion: Fireworks Are for Humans, Safety Is for Dogs

We get it — fireworks are part of the tradition. But so is protecting the ones we love, and for many of us, that includes a certain tail-wagging, belly-rubbing, treat-loving family member. So, this July 4th, while you’re grilling steaks and watching the sky sparkle, remember to make it a celebration your dog can enjoy from the safety of a quiet corner with a peanut butter Kong. They might not understand freedom, but they’ll definitely appreciate not feeling like the world is ending.

Stay safe, stay pawsitive, and give your dog an extra snuggle from us.

Great question. Let’s face it, dads are so much easier to shop for than moms. We’re pretty simple when it comes to gift giving. Do you know what to get dad for Father’s Day? All you have to do is ask us and we’ll tell you. Moms, on the other hand, tend to be generic in their answers like, “Oh, whatever you want to get me is fine.” Or, “I don’t need anything, just your love.” How sweet.

First and foremost, for the dad who has everything – consider getting him a gift certificate for pet waste removal service! If he doesn’t have a dog, get him one (with his permission) and a gift certificate for pet waste removal. That’s the number one reason families won’t get a dog, they don’t want to clean up after it. Problem solved.

Ok, after that shameless plug, here are Father’s Day gift ideas tailored to different types of dads:

🎣 For the Outdoorsy Dad

Portable campfire or fire pit. How portable? Portable enough o load in the pick-up truck and haul it off to a campground that allows fire pits. Or at least portable enough to move around so he can mow the lawn. Better yet, have someone else mow the lawn. Ah, another gift idea – hiring a lawn mowing service!

Fishing gear upgrade. (tackle box, reel, rod) My guess is that he already has most of this stuff but might need, or want, something really special. If that’s the case, you might as well ask him or get him a gift certificate for Scheels or Bass Pro Shops. That way he can get what he really wants.

Hiking GPS or multi-tool. I’m not sure about the GPS as real men don’t need directions. OK, we may need them, but we’ll never ask for them, especially from an electronic device. Nope, just get us a real old fashion fold out paper map and we’ll find our way. Most of the time.

National Park annual pass. Now this would be cool! There’s nothing better than to go on a drive and turn into a national park just to explore.

🛠️ For the Handy Dad

High-quality tool set. That’s “high quality.” Not the cheap tools made in Taiwan, China, or a plethora of other non-US countries. On the other hand, if you’re not making a living with your tools, then the less costly tools may be just the thing. Keep in mind, that no matter how many tools you think your dad has, there’s always more. He can never have enough tools in my opinion, even when it looks like he has 20 pairs of pliers that all look the same.

Digital tape measure. If your dad like to build stuff like me, then a digital tape measure come in handy. They’re great if you have to measure across a room to get the square footage of a living space.

Laser level. If you need it, great. If you don’t need it, still great. Laser levels just plain ol’ look cool when you’re trying to hang a picture on the wall. It makes it look like you know what you’re doing, even when you don’t.

Workshop subscription box. (like Bespoke Post or Craftsman Crate) Admittedly, I have no idea what these are. I’m pretty old and not a big fan of anything subscription based. However, if you’re a young dad and haven’t spent a lifetime collecting tools for your repertoire, then this may be for you. New tools every month, whether you need them or not.

🎧 For the Tech-Loving Dad

Wireless earbuds or smart speaker. Much like tools, dad can never have too many tech devices. I personally have 3 smart speakers, and I’m not really sure why.

Smartwatch or fitness tracker. I’m not a fan of smart watches, or any jewelry for that matter. But there are lots of dads who are. Just make sure you get the right watch for his device as Apple and Android typically don’t play nice together.

Bluetooth grill thermometer. These are the best! Yeah, you could stick a thermometer in your meat and open up the grill to check the temp once in a while. But do that when you can have the internal temperature sent right to your phone! There are temperature gauges that track internal temps, external temp, and send you a warning whenever the temp is out of range. A real neat product for the amateur grill master.

🍺 For the Chill Dad

Whiskey or beer tasting set. This would be nice, although I prefer tequila. Still a great way to try out different spirits. Even cooler would be to have your own tasting party and do a blind taste test. My family did that with tequila one year and the results were eye opening.

Personalized beer mugs or decanter. It’s a dad thing. We like seeing our name on a mug, or some bible verse that we can read while throwing back a cold one. And a decanter? They simply look sophisticated when company comes over for a little get together.

Subscription to a craft beer or coffee club. See the whiskey or beer tasting set above, only replace it with coffee. There are coffee beans of the month clubs that will send you raw beans to roast to your liking. Coffee tastes like hot water filtered through dirt to me, so I wouldn’t know the difference. But for a real coffee connoisseur, this may be just the ticket.

Speaking of tequila, I just picked up some awesome shot glasses carved out of Himalayan pink salt that cuts out one of the steps for taking shots. I keep them in the freezer and never have to worry about having salt on hand for enjoying tequila. Way cool!

🎁 Universal, Easy Wins

Customized photo frame or photo book. I actually like these. It’s the best way to display hundreds of photos without clogging up your walls with picture frames. The photos change every 10 seconds or so, so that you can enjoy the memories with your family.

Gift card to his favorite restaurant or hobby store. Nothing says “I love you” like cold hard cash. Or a gift card in this case. Let him pick out the gift he really wants and save you the hassle of doing it at the same time.

“Dad” coupons (e.g., one free car wash, game night of his choice) These are great for younger kids to get their dads. After all, dad’s really like to spend time with their children, but doing what he wants instead of a boring round of Candy Land.

Conclusion

When all is said and done, dad really wants to simply feel noticed, needed and loved. Too bad we only recognize this once a year. Like mother, we should show our appreciation for them all year round.

Happy Father’s Day!
