Answers to Your Questions

6. What types of complimentary businesses can I start?

There are many types of complimentary business you can start at the same time as a pooper scooper business. The obvious ones are usually the most difficult and time consuming ones. Statistics show that one out of every three Americans own a dog and that they spend several millions of dollars a year on their pet. So why not start a different pet related business at the same time, as long as it’s feasible. Let’s take at look at a couple of possibilities.

When I first started Scoop Masters, I was told to start a dog walking business. I thought about it... for about 10 seconds... then decided it wasn’t for me. After all, it sounded like work to me, and I started my own business so I wouldn’t have to work! At least not work too much. I was in and out of the average home in about 4 minutes and the thought of walking a dog for a half hour or an hour at a time just didn’t appeal to me. That doesn’t mean you can’t do it though. There are several pooper scoopers that combine dog walking with poop scooping. So it is something to consider.

Another idea was the pet sitting business. See above. Just too time consuming. Besides, there are dozens of pet sitters in just about every town, and frankly, I’d rather network with them instead of compete with them. I other words, refer each other’s businesses to each other’s existing customer base. To me, that was more cost effective. I would ad one caveat to that though, and that would be dog boarding. Just about every holiday season, I get calls from people, who didn’t think to reserve a kennel in advance, who are looking to board their dogs. If you live in an area that allows it, you could start boarding dogs at your house. All you need to do is buy a few chain link dog kennels and set them up in your back yard or garage. You could easily start by just boarding for your scooping customers who go on vacation and just work on a referral basis. It’s fairly easy to do as long as you’re responsible and remember to feed them and give them water. An occasional run in the back yard would be nice too.

How about pet grooming. Oh puhlease! It takes special people to get in the tub with a wet, hairy dog. Well, you know what I mean. I give my dog a bath about twice a year, and each time I get a driveway full of hair, clothes full of hair, a body full of hair, and just wet hair everywhere! And what does my dog do? She runs in the back yard and rolls around in the dirt and takes a nap! No thanks. I don’t have the patience to be a dog groomer. And again, I’d rather network with them instead of compete with them.

Consider a dog taxi. No, you don’t drive around town waiting for a dog to flag you down for a ride. Bur, since you are driving around town during the day already, you can provide transportation for dog owners who need to transport their dog for whatever reason. Keeping veterinarian appointments are the primary purpose for pet taxis because many people work during the week and the vet’s office is simply to crowded on Saturday mornings. This is especially useful at the beginning of your scooping venture when you do have a bit more time during the day and you just want to drive around in your moving billboard (your work truck) for a few hours a day.

This next idea is one that I believe makes the most sense for the pooper scooper business, and that is pet food delivery. One of the best systems I know of is Flint River Ranch Premium Pet Food. Why?

It’s simple:

You don’t have to stock it at your house
You don’t have to actually deliver it
Your customers can re-order online 24/7
It gets shipped directly from the manufacturer
You don’t have to concern yourself with invoicing your customer
You get the commission on every order
You get the commission on every re-order!

Flint River Ranch is made with human grade foods with real meat and is oven baked for easy digestibility. There are no corn fillers, no by-products, no chemical preservatives. It cost less to feed because you feed your dog less, and since it’s healthier, there are fewer visits to the veterinarian. Read more about it at www.premiumpetfood.com. Learn how you can become a distributor for only $25 a year. (And you don’t even have to pay that until 6 months later!)

There is one more pet related business that has come to my attention more than a few times over the years, if you have the stomach for it. That would be pet pick up. I market my business using pet poop pick up, yet I still get calls for pet pick up. Yup, you guessed it. It’s a service to pick up people’s deceased animals and dispose of them. I’m not sure what to do with dead animals, but I do know that one person charged an average of $100 a pop for a medium sized dog. He would come to your home and remove the former pet and dispose of it. As an added service he would have options like cremation, an urn for the ashes, a nice memorial plaque. All kinds of ad-ons. I had a customer that spent about $2500 bucks on "funeral" arrangements for their pet. Now I don’t mean to be uncaring, but for $65.00 you can pick up another dog from the animal shelter, or you can visit the local grocery store on a Saturday morning and get a puppy for free.

And with that said, I’ll end this conversation now though I might possibly add more to it in the future as better ideas come my way. If you have any pet related business ideas that would compliment the dog poop pick up service business, let me know.
